Fulfilling a budget commitment, the government is investing $221 million in Mitacs, providing students with career-building opportunities while also helping Canadian companies innovate and compete globally.

Over its 18-year history, Mitacs has supported more than 21,000 post-secondary internships and trained more than 19,000 student and post-doctoral participants.

Mitacs programs have high success rates. We strongly encourage you to apply!

Overview of Mitacs Programs

Open to Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows.

Mitacs Accelerate is Canada’s premiere research internship program. It connects companies with research-based universities through graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who apply their specialized expertise to business challenges.

  • Projects receive $15,000 for each four-month internship.
  • Interested applicants can apply at any time.

The Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship provides a long-term funding and internship option for master’s and PhD students. All other Accelerate program guidelines apply.

  • Total Research Award: $40,000 for 18 months (Master’s students) and $80,000 for 36 months (PhD students).
  • Interested applicants can apply at any time.

Open to Postdoctoral Fellows.

Mitacs Elevate is a postdoctoral fellowship with a customized research management training component. Elevate fellows progress through the program in a cohort, giving them cross-disciplinary networking and peer-learning opportunities they might not have otherwise in their careers.
Over the two-year fellowship, Elevate fellows divide their time between their partner organization project and university-based research with their faculty supervisor.

  • Fellows receive a $55,000 minimum annual stipend/salary and a training curriculum valued at $7,500 per year.
  • Deadlines: January 24, 2018 (Intent to Apply) and February 21, 2018 (Full Application)

Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds research collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students registered for full-time studies at a Canadian university and faculty members at a university overseas. Partner countries include Brazil, China, France, India, Israel, Korea, Mexico, and Tunisia.

  • Recipients receive funds ($6,000 to $7,000) to support student travel and accommodation expenses, research-related expenses, and student stipend.
  • Applications will be accepted any time, starting in January 2018.

The Mitacs Globalink Partnership Award supports research collaborations between graduate students at Canadian universities and international industry partners (for-profit companies in any country except the United States).

  • Recipients receive a $15,000 CAD research grant in the Canadian professor’s name to support student travel and accommodation expenses, research-related expenses, and student stipend.
  • Interested applicants can apply at any time.

Mitacs Globalink also includes initiatives for international students to do research at Canadian universities.

Canadian Science Policy Fellowship

Open to Postdoctoral Fellows and Canadian Faculty Members.

In collaboration with Canada’s research and policy communities, Mitacs has established the Canadian Science Policy Fellowship. The initiative fosters relationships between government decision makers and academic researchers to help support policy challenges facing Canada.

  • Fellows receive remuneration that reflects their qualifications and is commensurate with comparable employment within the public service, typically in the range of $70,000–$80,000 per year. Fellows who are faculty members will receive a stipend to cover their housing and living expenses while at the host location.
  • Deadline TBD (the call for fellow applications is expected in December-January).
