Gloria Song, a graduate student of the Faculty of Law, has published a new paper about Nunavut's solid waste management issues in the Arctic Yearbook 2016.
Originally written for Professor Heather McLeod-Kilmurray’s Sustainability and the Law course, the paper, entitled “Lessons from Dumpcano: Governance Issues in Solid Waste Management in Nunavut” is Ms. Song’s first peer-reviewed academic publication.
The article explores how communities in Nunavut consistently fail to meet the waste management standards set by Nunavut’s legal framework, reflecting larger systemic issues of governance in the territory related to funding and infrastructure. The paper suggests a variety of measures for overcoming these challenges, ultimately suggesting that we need to fully understand how northerners experience and contribute to environmental harm so that the problems can be properly addressed.
