I hold a PhD from the Sociology Department at the University of Toronto. I am now a Banting Fellow and postdoctoral scholar at the Faculty of Law and a member at the the Human Rights Research and Education Centre here at the University of Ottawa. My work focuses on the regulation of complex social and legal problems in the community and in the criminal justice system (police, courts, corrections). I study risk management and governance practices through the lens of marginalized individuals and various other institutional and community professionals and stakeholders. My current research, supervised by Professor Marie-Eve Sylvestre, speaks to socio-legal and criminal justice questions, examining the logic and practices of defense lawyers who represent marginalized clients in lower criminal courts. This work will explore how managerial logic and therapeutic logic affect defense lawyers' ability to move beyond individual failure narratives and push forward arguments about the relevance of structural factors.
