Dr Filip Balcerzak, LL.M. currently works at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He is involved in an academic project “International Investment Law in face of challenges in renewable energy sector” (UMO-2018/28/C/HS5/00087) funded by the National Science Centre, Poland (Sonatina program).
For many years, he has been combining academic work with practise – he is admitted to the bar in two jurisdictions: Poland (adwokat) and Spain (abogado). He is a member of arbitration and litigation practice at SWW Pragmatic Solutions.
Having obtained the Edward Barry McDougall Scholarship, Filip completed LL.M. studies at the University of Ottawa with concentration in International Trade and Foreign Investment Law. The program he completed at the University of Ottawa constituted a crucial aspect of his academic career, specifically helping him to commence work on his Ph.D. thesis and accomplish a research project within the framework of the National Science Centre (Preludium program).
In 2016, he was granted a Ph.D. in public international law by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Ph.D. dissertation title: “Investor state arbitration and human rights”, written in English). This served as a basis for a monography published by Brill – Nijhoff (https://brill.com/view/title/34356).
He was a speaker at a number of conferences at, among others, Harvard Law School and Columbia University in the USA and Nagoya University in Japan.
In addition to the Edward Barry McDougall Scholarship, he obtained several other scholarships and awards, e.g. START stipend granted by the Foundation for Polish Science and award at the Competition for the best doctoral dissertation on procedural law in the memory of Stanisław Bukowiecki organized by the General Counsel to the Republic of Poland.
