Edward Barry McDougall Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in memory of Barry McDougall, BA, LLB, by his family to enable one Polish law graduate per year to travel to Canada to earn a Master of Laws degree (LLM) in Common and Civil Law at the University of Ottawa.

Edward “Barry” McDougall was an expert in energy law and served as a volunteer board member with the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) promoting the Association’s Eastern and Central European legal programs to young lawyers. Barry and his wife, Anne, travelled with the CBA professional development team to Eastern Europe each summer. Each September when they returned home, they would host all the interns. The McDougalls grew close to many of the young interns and would invite them and their families into their home to celebrate special events and holidays. These relationships often continued after the families had returned to Eastern Europe.

After a six year battle with cancer, Barry passed away in 1999. In 2000, Anne McDougall, and their three children—Drew, Catherine and Elizabeth—decided to establish the Edward Barry McDougall Memorial Scholarship at the University of Ottawa to celebrate his extraordinary accomplishments and to continue sharing his deep passion for teaching young Polish lawyers the intricacies of Canadian law.

Note: Due to the current social restrictions the Edward Barry McDougall Memorial Scholarship will not be given for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Agata Zwolankiewicz

The Faculty of Law is proud to announce that its Master student Agata Zwolankiewicz has received the Edward Barry McDougall Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Law for her project entitled " Hardship and force majeure as grounds for adaptation and renegotiation of investment contracts- what is the extent of the powers of arbitral tribunals?”

Below the student’s first impression of Ottawa and the uOttawa Law School.

Congratulations to the recipient!

Student first impressions:

Students have been enjoying the beautiful weather at the beginning of September. It was a great time to use the time between the classes and walk around Ottawa! The capital city has a beautiful architecture with mesmerizing buildings and lots of green spaces which are just perfect to have a picnic! Naturally, it is a must to try the typical Canadian treats – Poutine and BeaverTails.

During the first week at the University of Ottawa, there are many events that are organized by the University and the students – it’s not only about the mandatory courses! Student clubs and faculties encourage students, including international students, to participate in the activities outside of the curriculum and to pursue their interests.

On September 4, 2019, law students had the amazing opportunity to take part in the reception at the Supreme Court. What a way to start the academic year!
